What is Talent? “Talent” is a concept that takes on different meanings depending on who you ask. In the music industry , it is often defined as the ability to attract and grow an audience. However, in a city like Nashville, where a constant influx of exceptionally talented individuals arrive daily, all striving for their “big break,” standing out in the midst of this talent pool can be a daunting challenge.

It is crucial to distinguish between talent and skill in the music industry. A musician may possess exceptional technical skills in playing an instrument or creating music but  still struggle to attract an audience or lack the charisma required for an engaging stage performance. Some individuals are born with a god-given, magnetic energy that radiates through their music and live performances. It is possible to work hard and be technically proficient in music, but you may not have the gift for it.  While skill can be added to talent through practice and dedication, talent itself is something that’s either present or not. There are remarkable singers and musicians who have sharpened their skills over years, yet something seems missing in their performances. On the other hand, artists like Chris Stapleton and Adele possess that elusive, innate talent that consistently sends shivers down the spines of their listeners.

Stage presence is another pivotal element in the equation for a successful artist. There are singer-songwriters who are extraordinarily talented and produce outstanding recordings, yet falter when it comes to performing on stage. This is one reason why some individuals choose to remain behind the scenes as songwriters, because succeeding as a performer often demands not just talent but also the personality and stage presence to connect with their audience.

Being a songwriter and artist in a city as artistically charged as Nashville comes with its fair share of challenges. Nashville is steeped in musical culture and attracts individuals from all over who aspire to access its many opportunities. I have often struggled with my own identity as an artist due to this pressure. I have been a songwriter from a young age, but for years, I kept my work hidden, sharing it only with close friends and family. Moving to Nashville was both intimidating and reassuring. Surrounded by an abundance of musical talent, I finally felt at home among people who shared my passion. This environment encouraged my growth as an artist and as an individual.

I decided to say “screw it” and started putting myself out there more by participating in writers’ rounds and performing at shows. Over my three years living in Nashville, I have come to realize that there will always be someone more talented, better connected, and with more opportunities. I faced a choice, I could succumb to self-doubt and abandon my goals, or I could see it as an opportunity to improve.

When I initially began participating in rounds, I feared that my work wouldn’t measure up, and others would rip my songs to shreds. But, as I took the stage, I discovered that everyone is exposing themselves to the spotlight, and we all share the same goals. There is a strong sense of community, with everyone eager to support each other, and I found comfort in that. I have met so many amazing individuals and encountered numerous opportunities that I’m incredibly grateful for.

The concept of talent carries various meanings, but in the end, it is the personal definition that holds the most significance. The industry has increasingly emphasized “content” over art, driven by social media algorithms, where talent is largely defined by the audience’s opinion. However, true success lies in creating music that resonates with your heart and holds personal meaning. That is what matters most to me!
